In den frühen 1950er Jahren erbte José Dutra Sobrinho, auch bekannt als Zeca, eine kleine Farm in São João do Manhuaçu, Brasilien, in der kaffeefreundlichen Region Zona de Mata in Minas Gerais. Zeca widmete die Farm der Kaffeeproduktion und baute sie über vier Jahrzehnte aus. Doch Rückschläge, darunter Qualitätsprobleme und Preiskrisen, machten seine Bemühungen beinahe zunichte.
Nach Zecas Tod im Jahr 1999 übernahmen seine Söhne Ednilson und Walter die Farm und erbten sein Erbe von über 300 Hektar Kaffeeanbau. Sie setzten die Arbeit ihres Vaters fort, investierten in die Plantage, erweiterten ihr Wissen und erwarben mehr Land. Heute gilt Fazenda Dutra als eine der nachhaltigsten Spezialitätenkaffeefarmen Brasiliens und würdigt die Tradition von Zeca.
Wenn es um Nachhaltigkeit geht, gehen die Dutra-Brüder über die blosse Zertifizierung hinaus. Von ihren 1.000 Hektar reservieren sie über 300 für die Erhaltung und Regeneration von Land. Sie kümmern sich gewissenhaft um die Abwasserentsorgung, um die natürlichen Quellen und Wasserfälle auf ihrem Anwesen zu schützen. Windschutzsträucher verbessern die Schädlingsbekämpfung und Kaffeestroh dient als Dünger, wodurch der Bedarf an Pestiziden und Chemikalien verringert wird. Fazenda Dutra ist führend in Sachen Nachhaltigkeit und verfügt über Brasiliens erste solarbetriebene Pulpermaschine mit 51 Photovoltaikmodulen, die jährlich 18.400 kW erzeugen. Sie planen, diese auf 800 Module zu erweitern und die meisten Maschinen zur Selbstversorgung auf Solarenergie umzustellen. Ednilson und Walter sind sich ihrer sozialen Verantwortung bewusst und beschäftigen in der Hochsaison bis zu 600 Mitarbeiter, was Auswirkungen auf zahlreiche Familien hat. Sie legen Wert auf das Wohlergehen der Mitarbeiter durch Schulungen, Sicherheitsmaßnahmen, ein Familiengesundheitsprogramm, eine Food Hall mit gesunden Mahlzeiten, Unterstützung für den Obst- und Gemüseanbau in „Koloniehäusern“ und eine ländliche Schule für örtliche Kinder.
